Topic 3: Flocculation

In this experiment students are given the opportunity to design and perform their own individual experiments with respect to flocculation. Using the same water from previous experiments, students can test different flocculation design guidelines and theories. Example experiments included:

  • Effects of tapered vs single stage flocculation on turbidity removal

  • Optimizing the duration of each flocculation stage

  • Comparing floc break-up and re-formation under different coagulation mechanisms

Most experiments were performed using a Photometric Dispersion Analyzer in order to quantify the rate and extent of floc formation and/or break-up. The instrument provides an arbitrary measurement, flocculation index, where an increase is an indication of aggregation and a decrease signifies floc break-up.

Some examples of the results:

1) Optimization the duration of each flocculation stage

1) Comparing floc break-up and re-formation under different coagulation mechanisms
